Kurbaan : Review

November 23, 2009 at 11:58 am 37 comments

When it come entertainers Dharma productions never disappointed us. Many movies deals with terrorism came in Bollywood in past few years. But I will say majority are half baked or love stories. What make kurbaan different from rest of the movies of similar genre is, probably this is the first Bollywood (or Indian) movie which dealt with Global terrorism and other thing is rather than others of similar genre, the story progress with the point of view of terrorists (not portraying them as either baddies or goodies, just express there emotions and psyche) as well as moderate peoples and also movie portrays pain of helpless spectator who lost his loved one in one of the attack. The movie concentrates on its core theme rather than distracting sub plots and songs.

Plot
Avantika, a lecture at a university in Delhi fall in love with Ehsaan a professor from similar university and soon they get married and relocate to New York. But soon they find out that things are not cool as it seems and no one can be trusted. I don’t want to tell anything further and spoil the fun of watching a thriller

My take
A good story with style and substance is rare thing in Bollywood. Kurbaan is one of those kinds. It has a tight script and fast paced screenplay. The performances of lead actors are commendable .I have never seen Kiron Kher in such a powerful role. Never thought Vivek Oberoi knows anything other than over acting But he is too good in this movie. Cinematography and Background score is excellent. I’m sure this movie will take Indian movie to next level. Guess we have got another Abbas-Mustaan. Kudos to Rensil D’Silva and his team. Really smart one. Yeah Some Love Stories have Blood on them.

Scene to watch out: A bullet wound surgery, climax

Pros: Screen play, climax, back ground score, art direction and cinematography, saif-Kareena chemistry, fewer songs (but good ones), no item numbers, tough and dark one.
Cons: First half an hour (a bit drag), Too hot for kids (don’t take kids with you for this movie), not for masses.

Kanagu ,it may not go well with mass(also due to some religious statements) but it is a class movie.I saw this movie with my friends and we all liked it 😀
Between this is not the one for those who like dance-sing type movies.I will say a good dark movie with high technical and production values 🙂 .

      Thanks Swaram 🙂 ,
@ unwanted masala…….exactly…for that reason it may won’t go well with masses(a sensitive\serious one….but has some strong religious statements\portrayals)….people who prefer song-dance ,rona-drama won’t like this movie….a good dark thriller
between surprised to see that ajab prem ki….was housefull on lastweek too

hmmm getting varied reviews on this!! But am sure am not watching it as I can’t stand Kareena Kapoor!!!

But tell me, many people have said that it is a mix of New York & Fanaa, do u agree?

Even i don’t like kareena and vivek oberoi. But they are surprisingly good in this one(she kinda underplayed her character)
@ Newyork and fanna …Fanna is more about amir-kajol love story rather than terrorism.Newyork also deals with the friendship, love and all(though it has a little similarity with the plot). So here diffrence is rather than concentarting on subplots it concentrates more on core theme and deals with the psyche\emotions of terrorists, those who related to them and those who are affected by there operations.Compared to others it is technically very good.
Few loopholes\cliches are there but tight and fast paced screenplay coverup all that.
It is not a movie for masses .So if you prefer watching SRK type tearjerkers or usual sing-dance-cry bollywood flicks avoid it
Watch it if you like dark thrillers or unconventional movies

Might give this a miss; nothing has provoked me yet to go for this movie. The negative reviews played a good part after the movie released.

Btw, why dont you, Kanagu and me go for a movie together ? We are living in the same city and havnt caught up yet. What say ?

    Excellently “written” review.

But I slept through the movie in the second half. The first half was dragging with a lot of fade-in-fade-out sequences! 😦

The photography was good and it gave a classy look to the entire movie.

I woke up just in time for the final sequence and I loved those explosions. They were handled very well.

I found the movie good, but there were some flaws as well. For one, Vivek Oberoi’s character going on a quest to hunt out the terrorists by himself was strange to say the least, when he could have simply called agent Collins and let the police handle things. Secondly, I found Saif to be too subdued in the movie; he seemed to be lacking in intensity and did not look like a character driven to desperation by losing everything dear to him.

yeahh flaws are there. But pace of the movie covers it all 🙂

One main thing was why vivek obroe didn’t tell everything to colins before itself and another thing is why kareena didn’t call 911.After all it is a Bollywood movie. So all these flaws are expected 🙂
