Dark is Beautiful
June 7, 2009
Anish is that such a bad thing to be born with a black tone, my friend Vijay asked me after watching two back 2 back fairness cream advertisement. I just smiled at him and in fact I didn’t show much interest to that question. But when I came back home I felt there is something thought provoking in that question.
I just don’t understand why people are so much obsessed with color tone. I guess we were born as a semi racist(including me). Some time back I got shocked when my 5 year old nephew commented about his friend like “ she is a black face, I think she is from Africa“,(He thinks, he is a British boy coz he is fair skinned. First I didn’t know what to tell him coz at this tender age, he started categorizing people in the basis of skin tone. Later I advised him don’t ever call anyone like that and tried to make him understand by telling some stories. That day I understood from a 4 year old kid to 70 year old person, everyone is obsessed with this thing. If we check matrimonial columns, most of the ads will be going like this,”25 year old …….guy looking for wheatish color girl with pg qualification…….”.I read in an article that, this poor female got a warm welcome during telephonic interview(in fact the HR person showed so much interest in her ,I guess for some media manager post),But once she walked in, they told like ohh it is you Miss Roshni…….Guess what, she didn’t get job coz she were not beautiful.
I guess emergence of cable TV also contributed a lot for this cause. Did anyone ever thought, why most of the time Miss World, Miss Universe contests are won by contestants from third world countries like India, South Africa, and Venezuela. If you just notice who is sponsoring this events, then you will get a clue (mostly by top cosmetic products companies). There aim is by publicizing this events, they just want to make us (people from 3rd world countries) crazy about beauty (including skin tone) and market there product. We will proud about our beauty pageants and spend so much money for getting cosmetic products of these companies, by dreaming to be like them on one day .The advertisements also contribute a lot (by showing like, gal/guy is not getting a job, boyfriends\girl friends, marriage, attention because of there skin tone).I’m not against or criticizing usage of cosmetic products or being conscious about our beauty. In fact I encourage everyone to be conscious about there beauty and be smart always. But I think our mentality should change. Does the beauty mean fair toned skin people? If you tell yes, then do you think Bipasha Basu, Kajol, Konkana sen (She is the best actress in bollywood and personally my favorite actress),Oscar award winner Hally berry are not beautiful. And among actors Rajni kanth(the guy who can turn millions from India, Japan, china crazy by his style and mannerisms ),Ajay Devgon, Will smith , Martin lawrence etc are a few among the list
Some time back in an interview actress\model Koena Mitra commented that “It is very sad that we have obsession with fair skin tone. We have the most exotic chocolate skin even foreigners envy. I only wish we could feel comfortable in our skin and be proud of it. As I said earlier I guess it is our mentality should change .We must identify the beauty beyond the color. I guess despite of color a person’s character, smartness, dress sense, Behavior makes him beautiful. Except guys\gals rose in city’s, most of the dark toned people believes they are not beautiful coz there are not fair skinned. Guys just woke up, everyone is beautiful, shed your inferiority complex \mentality .Be yourself and be confident about yourself.
And finally I just want to tell those who think dark skinned toned are unprivileged, we all are created by God. If we make fun of his creation (no matter dark skinned or handicapped or unprivileged people in society). It is equivalent to making fun of him. So do you want to make fun of your creator?
PS: Be yourself, it is your character and the way you behave with others make you beautiful not skin tone

Anish, This is so true.. and so sad that skin colour has become so important.. I thinl it is being reinforced consciously or unconsciously every where in our society .. As far as that little kid that you were talking about is concerned – I think the adults around him have helped reinforce such biases. I have seen my daughter interact with everybody with equal ease.. She does not even notice the skin colour.. probably because she is being brought up in a multi cultural place and coz we donot make an issue of it either..

I guess its a part of colonial hang up… may be we associate whiteness with “rulers” ? or may be because being white is so rare in india?

what to say …i guess itz strongly linked with our film celebrities and models also
……may be people try to compare themselves with film artists,i think that is the main problem…..
