Racist Attacks on Indians in Australia

May 30, 2009

The recent attacks on Indian students happening in Australia are so sad and disturbing to the Indian student communities in Australia  .It was so disturbing, the sight of sravan Kumar, one of the student attacked by a group of Australians last week in Australia. This is also not a good news for all those who are preparing to go to Australia. Now a days Australia is the hottest destination of higher studies compared to us and uk. And also Australian universities are contesting each other to woo Indian students. If they can’t ensure the safety and security of students who left there family and spend a hefty money, then why are they trying to attract International students. if they won’t take immediate action against this and make sure these kind of incidents won’t happen in future, then parents will think twice before they sending  there wards to Australia for higher studies(or will be blacklisted by them). We don’t know whether it is racial attacks or not. If it is racial attacks, then it should be handled properly and responsible persons should be punished properly. It is so happy to hear government acted fast by calling Australian high commissioner and PM to pass our concern about the same and asked them to take immediate action to restore the confidence.

The major advantage of foreign universities is the quality of education and global exposure. Now day’s Indian institutions like XLRI, IIM, and SP Jain can compete with any of the top universities in the world. I guess they are sending there students to Europe and other countries for three months (so they are getting global exposure also). What i feel is Our country should come up with more top class Institutes like IIM, SP Jain,XLRI,FMS and all. So that our students can avail similar opportunity in India on a reasonable fees and can study without worrying about any racist problem and all.

I admire Indians joining in one voice against racist attacks on Indians and request other Indians across the world to join in.
Let us boycott the services of any organization, where you feel that all are not treated equal. Many of my colleagues and I decided not to travel by Air France long time ago. We take international travels at least once a month. If more of us join, I am sure we will send a right message to the already financially crippled and poorly managed airline.
I have changed our family holiday destination to Mauritius from Sydney and am aware of a few other like minded people, who have acted the same way. Tourism Australia should continue having sharp decline in the number of visitors until they learn their lessons.

We are very large in numbers and have adequate spending power to impact balance sheets and Jobs in many of these Institutions.

Our Prime minister and senior political leaders, responsible media and many well informed people around the world do realize that we need to tell the few misguided people that Indians are self respecting people and India is a fast progressing country.

My frequent global travels make me believe that many people around the world suffer from various misconceptions and are ignorant about India. During 1947, Winston Churchill believed that India will get divided in to pieces and Indian democracy will fail in case British left the country.
Sardar Patel and J L Nehru, not only integrated the country but also resolved a large number of critical issue left by a horribly poor planned and executed transition by so called ‘ well educated and mature ’ British bureaucracy.
We recently conducted free and fair elections in worlds’ largest democracy and a mandate proving India’s mature democracy.
Our economy is growing at 7 %, whereas Australia & UK are growing at less than 2%.
World businesses are coming to India to secure their future.
We also have many expats from these countries. India has a long tradition and strength of accepting diversity; we demonstrated once again with having a catholic as our top political leader and a Sikh being our prime minister and one of the most respected ex – President Mr. Abdul Kalam, a Muslim.
We lead in Cricket, Chess, Snookers, have started showing in Olympics. We also won some foreign awards like Grammy, Oscar and Bookers. Indians are leading some of the largest businesses in the world and we see Indian names among richest in Europe and World
Let us unite as Indians and let us totally boycott any institute or community who has any racial bias. We are sure to be reigning economic power in the near future and the mature world knows this; those who do not, need to learn.
Let the likes of Air France, Tourism Australia and Universities in Australia continue losing business and continue having Job cuts till the time they learn , how to be professional both in Business and treating fellow human beings.

    Giriraj

Well after goin trough all the comments i would like to register mine too..

These kind of incidents keep happening in Australia.I did my masters thr.Even i faced one

such incident where a bunch of youngster whos was in their early 20s threw stones on me around 20 feet from me in a main CBD in Sydney.I didnt mind and just walked away..

HOLD ON…This doesnt mean all Aussies are bad..Just because a bunch of jobless wrecked youths attack otrs it doesnt potray the full view of a nation.May be as students say the police say they dont take complaints it might be not be true on all cases.I remember my room mate filed a complaint in police station where he was treated better than what happens in India.

People Should understand onething it is quite common to get attacked in any other nation where we dont belong. In todays recession to Indians dominate thr in main jobs and many business too.So it is quite natural to get annoyed.

Secondly we go there knowingly things happen of all sorts.

Indians try to live in remote areas to save in rent and they tend to travel for hours to reach uni.And so it happens since those are very quite and less public movements.

But the same thing happened in city also.I lived just 5mins walk to Darling Harbour where my room mate was attacked and they stole money,mp3 player and misc items. But those were again youngster migrated to aus from othr nation and they were from jordan if i am not wrong. But that doesnt mean all poeople from Jordan are bad.things happen everywhere.Take in India the forigners cant expect a police man to file a FIR
if it is given against a local.Take the issue in GOA.things didnt happen just like that.

But again when things happen to such a severe situation it is duty of any nation to take

action against the accused than to protect them just because they are their citizen.

To all aussies who are firing in blogs against INDIANS

DONT FORGET U R ORIGIN IS MUST BE MIGRATION OR A ACUSSED IN JAIL.AUSS DOESNT BELONG TO YOU.THE ABORIGINALS OR THE TRUE CITIZEN AND NOT YOU PEOPLE.JUST LIKE YOU WE PEOPLE GET THERE.AND YOU DONT HAVE RIGHTS TO COMMENT ON US.BUT I CAN SUPPORT MY MOTHER NATION BECAUSE IT IS MY NATION FOR YEARS TOGETHER.YOUR ENTIRE POPULATION PUT TOGETHER DOESNT EQUAL TO A POPULATION OF ONE OF OUR BANKS CUSTOMER.

JUST BECAUSE OUR MEDIA HYPED THE ISSUE U R TURNING BACK. I KNOW AUSSIES R GUD AND I LOVE THEM .BUT…

IT DOESNT MEAN U CAN TELL WHAT EVER U FEEL.

AND ALSO REMEMBER OUR NATIONS MONEY PLAY A % IN YOUR GDP.

N E WAYS LETS HOPE THINGS CHANGE..

That’s Right, The Australians Are Really Jealous That We Indians Are More Intelligent And They Cannot Stand To See Us Progressing. We Must Be United And Fight Against Racism If Not In Australia, The World Is Big.

    When were Aussies not racists?

Aussies dont even belong to Australia except Abroginals.Whether its their abusive cricket team or these local hooligans… its better these low level aussi hooligans

educate themselves and get eligible for jobs rather than looting students. These students are a BIG SOURCE of Aussi economy.
About police… in many incidents the police also didnt help and said slurs against Indians and protected their criminals wandering in the streets.

Also when they say Indians work in ‘less money’ here is an EYE OPENER to all the poor racist white aussies…

In US about 40% Indians have masters degree which is 5 times the local average. Also Indians are richest ethnic group even better than whites.
Indians are just 1% in US but own 50% of all economy lodges and 35% of all hotels. Also about upto 30% of all high tech jobs in US has Indians.
Also worlds 90% PC runs on a Chip invented by an Indian so was worlds first and most popular email system.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indian_American

Aussies should remember that they are not the NATIVES of australia and have no right to look down to immigrants. The white aussies are IMMIGRANTS themselves.

Education is Australia’s third largest export industry worth more than AU$16 billion a year, with about AU $2 billion coming from Indian students. Also AUS earns millions through Bollywood movies…

……. the problem is that these aussies want a one side influx of money and too scared to give anything. So in total these attacks just shows the inability and jealousy.

These aussies are still living in colonial hangover and sense of false supremacy. The early they wake up the better they are.

The land which the australian whites claim as their own are forcibly occupied from the aboriginals. First they (whites) should go back to where their forefathers came from then they should advise others to do the same.

I would rather say that australia was more civilised before the whites arrived !

Do we Indians really have to send our kids to australia to educate them !? What kind of education would they receive in such an uncivilised country. I am afraid they would come back with some technical knowledge gained from these whites but less civilised than they were before they went there !

Just think about it and reconsider your options my dear fellow parents.

because Indians are more vulnerable. Most of the Indians go to Australia for higher studies by the thought of settling there.so they hesitate to complain. And why the Chinese\Japanese are not attacked because ,most of the people residing in western countries believes that Chinese \Japanese are expert in martial arts, thanks to Hollywood movies featuring Jackie Chan , jet lee etc :) .

@ Cynthia – May be the points U have mentioned are the reason for the attacks.Apart from that global meltdown and unemployment is also a reason and i guess Indians are more vulnerable compare to others as i said earlier.

The idea that Indians are being targeted in Australia is basically a myth.

In the past six weeks, there has been fifteen assaults on Indians students. Statistically that is a minuscule amount. It only seems like there is some “wave of attacks” against Indian students, because each individual incident is given front page coverage

In Australia, there are about 7.02459 assaults per 1,000 people per year.

    http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_ass_percap-crime-assaults-per-capita

That works out to 58 assaults per 100 000 people, per month. There being about 200, 000 Indians, numerically there should be about 120 assaults against Indians per month.

Bottom line: the whole thing is a media beat up. It is based on hysteria, generated by the media, for an Indian public who desperately want to believe that they are being victimised for some reason.

So are you trying to say,U’r government can’t provide sufficient security to there own nationalities as well as foreigners?.i’m so surprised to read U’r justification over this heinous attacks. If they can’t provide sufficient security to students who left there family and native for higher studies, then y u’r universities are trying to attract more students to Australia?

They’re not my stats, SDS, they come from nationmaster.com. I gather they get their stats from various sources.

However, from memory, they’re not that far off the official government crime stats. You can find those yourself at. http://www.aic.gov.au .

More than 200,000 Indians are living in Australia but they never complaint before! Only Punjab have problem as their main motto is not the study. just getting PR. because of these so called “student cum PR hungry ppl” genuine Indians are facing problems! Wherever we go, we face problems because of this “Punjab”. They have simple ambition ” just reach abroad by hooks or kooks” I have traveled almost all over the world and i found that these Punjab ppl represent Indians! even in Malaysia. Shame!
One more thing! i am Indian and me and my wife are living here for the past five years. we never faced any problem here. Aussies are so nice and caring that i don’t think that they are racist. I have lots of Aussie friends and it’s obvious that you get the same behavior what you do with others problem is with those who are fooling around. They are not here for study actually. Ppl from Punjab are coming here for study but never seen them doing a good job. Just taxi drivers or distributing papers or advertisements on flinder street station. Pls don’t spoil our reputation. Our Govt should stop these ppl from spreading over entire world.

I find it incredible that Indians in this day and age continue making excuses for their detractors. Personally, I cannot be bothered with whether one or other Indian has done this or that in Australia. A civilised society is not distinguishable by random tribal violence. Majority Hindu India also constitutes a substantial muslim minority and remains pluralistic in form and substance notwithstanding it’s substantial minority numbers. It’s time for these so-called secular western societies to show what they’re made of with their modest minority numbers or quit pretending to be these pluralistic societies they claim to be.
